Description

The faded flowers subsequently mature into short stalks of bright red fruit in fall

ending in clusters of 12-14 flowers that open blush pink before aging to white with green keels

they almost always survive

In our winter hardiness trials

as roots must be spread horizontally just below the soil surface and not stuck deep in the ground as is the case with virtually all other plants

Pteris wallichiana Taoshan Trail Malawi The faded flowers subsequently maturePteris wallichiana 'Taoshan Trail' is our second spore grown selection from our 2008 botanizing trip to Taiwan. The giant 8' tall, branched ferns grew at 6,200' elevation underneath giant Taiwania cryptomerioides, along the trail as we hiked toward the Taoshan Waterfall. In the garden, Pteris wallichiana grows best in average to moist, rich, organic soils.
